My novel, Saltwater Spirits and Sastra tote from Studio Gypsied (photo credit: Aqilah Zailan)

In December 2019, I sat down for an interview with Aqilah Zailan of Studio Gypsied, a conscious fashion label from Singapore.

I was familiar with Studio Gypsied since 2018 — Aqilah’s modern interpretation and designs of traditional batik caught my eye. In fact, I used one of her designs as color inspiration for the cover of Saltwater Spirits!

I was thrilled when Aqilah reached out to ask about an interview. It’s always special to share mutual respect and admiration with a fellow artist and their work.

Despite the 16 hour time difference, we sat down over Facetime and had a meaningful conversation. Aqilah was very curious about the process of writing Saltwater Spirits and my story as a writer. You can read the full interview on the Studio Gypsied blog.

Post-interview, we decided to collaborate on a giveaway. One winner was selected to win a copy of my book and the Sastra tote from Studio Gypsied. It warmed my heart to see how many people entered the giveaway — the interest in our brands and work blew me away. Thank you, Aqilah, for reading and spotlighting Saltwater Spirits.
